Hurricane Preparation Guide: 7 Things You Should Be Doing

While a hurricane can move fast they rarely arrive without any warning. Being prepared before a hurricane arrives will allow time for you to move to a safe location until the storm passes.

While the list below if by no means complete, the suggestions of hurricane preparation will provide you with some tools and options when things get nasty.

#1 – Hide Some $$$

To many people this may seem like a pointless task and to others it simply may not be possible. If you are able to stash a few dollars away we highly suggest you do so. Your emergency fund could come in handy to both buy supplies or transportation if needed. Remember to so this with cash and not rely on credit or debit cards. Natural disasters can often take out communication channels and your cards may be useless. A few dollars in your pocket may open some doors.

#2 – Bottled Water

When a hurricane hits, public utilities are often shut off. You reserve of water could be used for drinking, washing, and for flushing the toilet. We recommend 10 gallons per person multiplied by the number of days you wish to have water. It sounds like a lot but you’ll quickly see that is does not last as long as one might think.

#3 – Canned Foods

Just as your water rations above could help you survive for a number of days, so could some food that you have stored in the basement or closet. Remember to store the food on shelves and to only choose canned food as boxed food is easily water damaged and frozen food may not last should you lose power.

#4 – Portable Propane Stove

You’ll need a way to cook that canned food you stored away in #4 above. We’d recommend 2 propane bottles per day as well. Be certain to store the propane in a safe place and only cook outdoors in a well ventilated area!

#5 – Radio or Police Scanner

A radio or police scanner could prove to be very helpful should you decide to evacuate and want to avoid the traffic and take the fastest route available. These items could also keep you in touch with what is happening should you decide to stay in your home during a hurricane. In any case you should always contact a someone outside of the hurricane area and let them know your plans.

#6 – First Aid Kit

This may seem like a common item but over 90% of households do not have a fully stocked emergency first aid kit. We recommend buying a full feature kit that could cover a variety of injuries.

#7 – Common Sense

Perhaps the biggest flaw people have is not understanding how powerful and devastating a hurricane can be. If an evacuation is recommended you should really do so. If you’re aware of what may be happening you should even plan on leaving before the warning is given. Having some bags packed and your emergency supplies will leave you well ahead of most people. Remember that the goal is to get your family to a safe location until the storm passes. You’re home and possessions may not be there when you return. A home can be replaced. Your family and health cannot.
